TimberArt Handcrafted in India

Every TimberArt Piece Begins at a Bangalore Workbench

Traditional Indian woodworking brought to your home

Three generations of master carvers from Bangalore

Our Story in Wood

Where We Started

TimberArt began in 1987 when Ravi Shankar Kumar opened a small workshop on MG Road in Bangalore. His grandfather taught him to carve traditional patterns into teak and rosewood using tools passed down through three generations. Today, his son Arjun continues this craft, training eight local artisans in the same techniques.

We work with sustainably sourced Indian hardwoods from Karnataka and Kerala. Each piece takes between three weeks and two months to complete, depending on the complexity of the carving. Our workshop produces around forty custom pieces per year.

Selecting the Wood

We use teak, rosewood, and sheesham from certified suppliers in Karnataka. Each plank is inspected for grain pattern and density. The wood air-dries in our yard for six months before we begin work.

Hand Carving Patterns

Our artisans use traditional chisels and mallets to carve floral motifs, geometric patterns, and animal designs. Each carver specializes in specific styles learned through years of apprenticeship. A single chair can require forty hours of carving.

Assembly and Joinery

We use mortise and tenon joints reinforced with wooden pegs. No screws or nails touch our furniture. This traditional method ensures pieces last for decades. Each joint is cut by hand and fitted individually.

How Wood Affects Room Temperature

Finishing and Polish

We apply three coats of natural oil finish that protects the wood while showing its grain. The final polish uses beeswax mixed with carnauba. This process takes five days as each coat must dry completely.

Forty Custom Pieces Leave Our Workshop Each Year

Dining tables from ₹85,000 and carved chairs from ₹12,000

Six seater teak dining table with hand carved lotus border pattern along edges and relief carved legs finished with beeswax polish

Dining Tables

Our dining tables seat four to twelve people. The tabletops are single slabs of teak or rosewood, carved along the edges with traditional Indian motifs. Legs feature detailed relief carving. Most tables include matching carved chairs.

Each table edge receives hand-carved borders featuring lotus patterns, geometric designs, or peacock motifs. The carving depth ranges from 5 to 12 millimeters depending on wood hardness. Vijay Prakash ensures all table joints use traditional mortise and tenon construction without metal fasteners.

Tables arrive with detailed care instructions. We recommend oiling the surface every three months using teak oil. The carved patterns require gentle brushing during cleaning to remove dust from recessed areas. Proper maintenance ensures the table will last multiple generations.

Current lead time is eight weeks. Prices start at ₹85,000 for a six-seater set.

We ordered a dining table set in March and received it in May. The carving on the chair backs matches patterns my grandmother had in her old house in Chennai. Quality is excellent. The wood feels solid and heavy. Worth the wait and the price.

I commissioned two custom armchairs with peacock motifs carved into the backrests. Arjun showed me drawings before starting. The final pieces exceeded expectations. They sit in my reading room now. Guests always ask where I found them.

Bought a carved console table for our entrance hall. The rosewood grain is beautiful. Delivery to Hyderabad took three weeks. They packed it very carefully. Two years later it still looks brand new. Just needs occasional dusting and yearly oiling.
